Hard Bargain

A repossession vessel crewed by Cal Ransom and his allies.

The Hard Bargain is a compact TrustUs! repossession pusher built to seize, disable, escort, or physically transport other spacecraft. It is roughly thirty years old and has accumulated years of improvised repairs, bypassed controls, mismatched components, and undocumented engineering fixes. Its bridge is a cramped oblong chamber with pilot and copilot stations on the ventral side, auxiliary navigation, communications, and sensor panels along the port and starboard walls, and a central ladder leading into the lower decks. The ship carries twin railguns and has fittings for torpedoes, though ammunition and operating condition vary with the crew’s finances. Its most important practical advantages are acceleration, maneuverability, and Deeks’s intimate knowledge of its limitations. As a lightweight pusher, it can overtake slower freighters and reposition captured vessels, but it is not designed to fight military ships. Most of its combat successes depend on surprise, improvisation, and using another ship or local conditions to alter the tactical balance. The Hard Bargain is built for asset recovery, not heroics. Its crew operates at the boundary between contract law, coercive force, and survival. The ship’s confined spaces intensify disputes, but they also force the crew into a degree of interdependence unusual among repo operations. Over time, the vessel becomes less a corporate tool and more a shared refuge for people who have become inconvenient to the institutions that nominally own or regulate them. Its onboard systems are powerful but unreliable. Gideon has rerouted or manually overridden numerous components, while Tierce attempts to impose more systematic controls. The tension between those approaches is embodied in the ship itself: it survives because it is both understood intimately and repaired constantly. The Hard Bargain has no right to remain operational as long as it does, which is precisely why its continued survival becomes a source of identity for the crew.
