Overlapping Legal Systems

Interstellar law is layered rather than unified. Planetary codes, corporate contracts, trade accords, lane regulations, religious charters, and recognized arbitration standards can all apply to the same dispute. The practical question is rarely which rule is philosophically correct. It is which institution can make its interpretation binding on ships, banks, ports, insurers, and employers.

Portable Jurisdiction

Contracts frequently import external law by reference. A lease signed on Corvalis may invoke Fairhold procedure, VESTA routing rules, and a local enforcement clause on a distant world. This produces agreements that function like portable jurisdictions, allowing corporations to carry preferred law into places where they possess little formal sovereignty.

From Judgment to Enforcement

Repo crews, Praetors, and private security forces exist because legal judgment and physical possession are separate problems. A claimant can be correct on paper and still need someone willing to board a ship, survive resistance, and return the asset intact.
