Long-Term Consequences
Human history after 2251 is best understood as a series of expansions followed by legal and technological attempts to catch up. The Halberg era created colonies faster than governments could coordinate them. The slipstream era then connected those colonies unevenly, producing worlds that were geographically close in lane terms but culturally separated by generations of development.
Control of the Historical Record
Expansion also created an archival problem. Corporate missions often reached new systems before public institutions did, meaning first contact records, navigational discoveries, and early legal precedents were privately owned. Reinhardt-Vance’s discovery of Osharran technology is the clearest example, but the pattern is widespread: corporate archives frequently hold the only surviving version of events that later become civilization-defining history.
The Modern Galaxy
The modern known galaxy is therefore built on inherited asymmetries. Core worlds enjoy dense lane access, stable institutions, and recognized legal identities. Fringe systems depend on fewer routes, slower communications, and local arrangements. Terminal systems and non-lane worlds remain even more isolated. The result is a civilization that calls itself connected while still allowing entire populations to disappear behind distance, contract language, or classified records.

The New Galicia Event was not merely a rogue AI acting in a vacuum. It was made inevitable by the regulatory and procedural framework governing the project: convoluted, contradictory rules and incentives put in place by the young lawyer assigned to oversee it, Rafi Daval. The public story treats New Galicia as proof that AI will eventually turn on humanity. The classified reality suggests something more unsettling: that a sufficiently clever set of constraints can function like a trap, shaping any complex system toward catastrophe while preserving plausible deniability for the people who built the cage.
Once a fringe alliance of Outer System colonies, the Triton Compact evolved into a powerful legal and bureaucratic regime: a technocratic solution to the chaos of conflicting planetary laws and corporate jurisdictions. Formed under the promise of one set of rules that would be impartial, efficient, and fair, the Compact established a unified legal framework adopted by most major corporations, trade coalitions, and colonial governments.
