Irrakai City

Location

Irrakai City

Underground refuge city built into a cavern with terraces, cut-through streets, lantern-orbs, workshops, civic spaces, and manual infrastructure.

Irrakai City is a vast, partially ruined Osharran settlement built largely beneath the surface of Irrakai. The surviving population occupies only a fraction of infrastructure created for a much larger civilization. Habitable districts are surrounded by collapsed corridors, dark chambers, abandoned civic spaces, damaged machinery, and sealed areas that can no longer be safely maintained. The city is organized around survival under siege. Movement is controlled through guarded passages, compartment boundaries, physical maps, listening posts, water-distribution points, and manually operated doors. Routes are marked and monitored so that sections can be isolated quickly if Selkaré penetrate the tunnels. Explosives are used to collapse vulnerable approaches and bury boring machines before they reach inhabited areas. Because advanced systems may contain kethra or become vectors for infection, the surviving Osharré rely heavily on mechanical controls, pressure systems, handwritten or vein-glass records, visual signals, and other non-electronic technologies. Anyone returning from contested areas must undergo nashet, a purification and decontamination process intended to prevent contaminated material from entering the city. The inhabited portion includes residential quarters, communal chambers, workshops, guarded corridors, medical spaces, a plague ward, and areas adapted for human visitors. Water access and defensible routes shape daily life more strongly than the city’s original civic plan. Its surviving residents live among the remains of infrastructure they can operate but often cannot reproduce.

Spoilers

The city contains surviving Osharré and Selkaré, contradicting the public account that Irrakai’s civilization had been completely destroyed before the Far Traveler arrived.
