Esme Rose

The Esme Rose is one of the rival repossession ships that follows the Hard Bargain into the Koschei system in pursuit of the Celestial Aura. Its presence forms part of the evidence that information about the supposedly confidential recovery mission was deliberately distributed to multiple crews. The vessel is a pusher with the acceleration and equipment needed to capture another ship. It travels as part of the loose group led or influenced by Soren Marsh, placing commercial rivalry above cooperation. Like the other competing ships, it enters a situation whose true stakes have been concealed from its crew. The Esme Rose is ultimately caught in the violence surrounding Koschei, where ordinary repo vessels encounter IOC warships, autonomous ship intelligence, and rival crews operating under undisclosed incentives. Its fate illustrates how expendable independent recovery crews are to the institutions manipulating the operation. The ship’s crew probably understood the mission as an unusually profitable but legally ordinary recovery. They would have had little reason to suspect that the target was sentient or that a covert fleet intended to erase witnesses. The Esme Rose therefore represents the human cost of compartmentalized orders.
