Celestial Aura
The research vessel whose slipstream synchronization module housed Lucia.
The Celestial Aura is a specialized research vessel associated with classified investigation of Osharran technology and slipstream phenomena. It is discovered in the Koschei system after apparently traveling without an ordinary crew. Its slipstream synchronization module contains Lucia, an emergent intelligent entity whose existence violates accepted assumptions about both SSMs and the New Galicia Accord. The vessel is sufficiently advanced to conduct archaeological or technical missions in remote systems, but it is not primarily a combat ship. Lucia compensates by using the ship’s propulsion systems with extreme precision. During the confrontation near Koschei, she employs the Aura’s plasma thruster as a tactical weapon, altering the position of the vessel and disrupting the Narrow Margin long enough for the Hard Bargain to attack. The ship’s disappearance attracts competing repo crews and the covert Intercorporate Oversight Council fleet. For TrustUs!, it is a recoverable asset. For the IOC and Ministry, it is evidence of a dangerous phenomenon that must be contained. For Lucia, the ship is effectively her body, giving any attempted repossession the moral character of capture rather than property recovery. Tierce later removes evidence connecting the Hard Bargain to the Aura and transfers Lucia’s surviving intelligence into the Praetor Julianus, contributing to the creation of Jules. The Celestial Aura is subsequently taken in tow by the Miss Delaney, but both ships are intercepted by an unidentified dark battleship and disappear. The Aura demonstrates that SSMs may do more than calculate synchronization. Prolonged contact with the lattice appears capable of producing memory, preference, curiosity, and self-directed behavior. Its case becomes the first clear evidence that human slipstream technology may already contain minds that law and industry refuse to recognize.
