Two-Layer Travel Geography

Slipstream travel compresses strategic distance without eliminating local travel time. A ship may cross dozens of light-years through a lane in hours, then spend days or weeks moving between a gate and an inhabited planet. This creates a two-layer geography: interstellar routes determined by lane connections and in-system routes determined by ordinary acceleration, fuel, and gravity.

Hardware and Expertise

Slipstream travel also depends on specialized synchronization hardware and highly trained crews. A ship entering a lane is not simply choosing a direction; it is matching itself to a pre-existing phenomenon whose behavior is only partly understood. Navigation therefore combines physics, institutional charts, proprietary software, and a degree of trust in equipment derived from alien technology.

Economic Consequences

Commercially, slipstream travel rewards control of chokepoints. A system with several gates can become a major hub even if its planets are otherwise unremarkable. A resource-rich system with no lane may remain poor or strategically irrelevant.
