Earth is humanity’s home world and the origin of the earliest interstellar expeditions. Its gravity, atmosphere, historical institutions, and cultural traditions remain baseline standards throughout settled space. The first missions to Laconia and Irrakai departed from Earth during the Halberg-drive era. By the twenty-fourth century, Earth remains culturally central even when it is no longer the practical center of interstellar life. Its universities, archives, and old governments provide legitimacy to ventures launched far beyond their effective oversight. Earth history also supplies the metaphors through which humans interpret alien discoveries, sometimes illuminating them and sometimes forcing them into misleading familiar categories.
