Lazaro Koltai
Koltai is the kind of freighter captain who can sell you a sob story and a get-rich-quick scheme in the same breath, and both will have some amount of truth in them. He is clever, smooth-talking, and self-interested, but he has lines he will not cross once real people start bleeding. Lazaro survives by remaining useful and by making every arrangement feel temporary. His ships, paperwork, and personal history all appear to have been repaired repeatedly rather than maintained according to any official standard. He recognizes the difference between an authority that merely wants compliance and one that intends to erase witnesses, which is why his opportunism sometimes gives way to genuine courage.
