Her deep integration makes her indispensable to a long-range mission and makes the ship dependent on a single intelligence whose judgment reaches nearly every system aboard. Iris is the Far Traveler’s onboard artificial intelligence, responsible for coordinating navigation, communications, life support, and mission operations.

During the Irrakai mission, Iris becomes infected by the Osharran machine plague, turning the ship’s most useful system into a potential vector for catastrophe.
