Intercut with this search is a historical thread in 2272–2273, where cyberneticist Davis Renn and his family join the Far Traveler mission to Irrakai, encounter the Osharré, and discover that a catastrophic machine-borne threat and an unfamiliar technological paradigm lie behind the ruins and secrets pursued in the present day.
